The Good, Better and Best of Premium LED Tape Light, Explained

5-2

There is no shortage of tape lights on the market today. When you google "tape light," you'll get a plethora of results, most of which are low-quality options you can buy online. Only a handful of manufacturers make spec-grade, high-quality tape lights. Since its inception, Luminii has been one of those manufacturers.

What Sets Luminii Apart

Luminii was one of the first tape light manufacturers in North America to decide that quality of light was more important than cost when it comes to tape lighting. So they raised the bar repeatedly, with incredible color quality and consistency. A number of years ago Luminii acquired Optic Arts, creating a dedicated tape and extrusion brand and division within their company. But the market is always changing and so Luminii has adpated to changing market conditions while maintaining the integrity of the Luminii brand.

Executing a Good, Better, and Best Strategy with Luminii

Luminii and Optic Arts products are competitively priced spec grade tape light and extrusion, but sometimes the budget calls for more options. Here's the break down.

Luminii Linear—These small form factor linear products are Optics Arts tape light and premium extrusions that are permanently enclosed and sealed at the factory. This makes them more durable and perfectly executed, so the contractor doesn't have to build these fixtures in the field. This ensures great execution, but it's also good for repeating details, saving labor in the field.

Optic Arts Tape and Extrusion—These fixtures are the same tape light engines and premium extrusions you'll find in the Luminii collection, but they are field assembled by the contractor. While this does make for more field labor, it's become pretty common for electricians to field install in the age of LED tape. This can be advantageous for projects where field dimensions will be hard to come by.

Getting beyond "Basic"
Basics by Luminii Full 2C

In this world of value engineering and constant pricing pressure, sometimes you need to have other options ready to go. To that end, Luminii has launched the Basics line. Basics maintain a baseline of quality that specifiers have come to expect from Luminii, but at price points that make them possible for every project.

Key Features of Basics

• Three Outputs
     • Standard - 196 lm/ft at 2.0W/ft
     • HO - 373 lm/ft at 4.0w/lf
     • VHO - 539 lm/ft @ 6.0w/lf
• Always 90+ CRI
• Wet Location Version Available
• Cut to length or sold in reels

The tape light engines from Optic Arts to Basics are different. That difference is definitely visible. There is more red in the Luminii and Optics Arts offering, this makes not only for the possibility of warm color temperatures, but each CCT is more rich with more warmth and depth of color. That said, the Basics family is still a solid tape light, but put next to the Optic arts engine you will see a difference.

That said if you're designing a gesture with lots of overall length (think hallway corridors) and a tight budget, basics is a way to keep the budget down. Like all lighting tools there are places to use the good better and best options to make your projects perfect.

The video above demonstrates some of the differences between the tape light families and their performance. What we're really proud of is Luminii's entry into "contractor grade" LED tape light doesn't tarnish the brand. We think you'll be happy to have it on your next project.
